The simplicity and complexity of plastic patterns in Assyrian sculpture

Abstract

ABSTRUCT:

The current research studies (the simplicity and complexity of the plastic patterns in Assyrian sculpture), which is divided into four chapters: The first chapter included a presentation of the research problem, which is defined by the following question: (What is the simplicity and complexity of the plastic patterns in Assyrian sculpture), while the goal of the study lies in (identifying the simplicity and complexity of the patterns). Fine art in Assyrian sculpture), and the research was limited to studying the sculptural works completed in Assyrian sculpture and within the specified time period between (2000-612 BC), and the chapter also included defining the most important terms included in the research. As for the second chapter: it included the theoretical framework and previous studies, which contained two sections: the first section was concerned with studying simplification and complexity in art, while the second section was focused on Study: Assyrian sculpture. The theoretical framework concluded with a set of indicators and previous studies, while the third chapter dealt with the research procedures, which included defining the research community, the nature of the methodology in it, its sample, and the tool. The research then analyzed the research sample models, and the fourth chapter dealt with the results and conclusions reached by the research, and the most important results are:              

1- Art in the advanced periods of ancient Iraq’s civilization was distinguished by the abundance of its artistic productions. It took many forms and diverse topics, as the artist chose the language of reality in forming the vocabulary and scenes, and was keen to monitor the smallest details through the method of treating people’s movements and positions, with attention to anatomical details. The subtleties of the human and animal body and amplifying them, and paying attention to the decoration of the clothes and jewelry that people wear and moving them towards the ideal.                                                                                           

 2- Art became a means of showing military and political power. Kings were depicted in heroic situations with precise details about their clothes and weapons, which reflects the importance of this power in politics and social thought. Art was also used as a media tool for documentation by depicting kings as they fought wars and achieved victories. Which highlights the development of the political and social content in art.                                                                     

 The research conclusions include:   

 1. Art can be considered as a mirror that reflects the plastic patterns of a certain time, which means that studying works of art helps us understand how human thought develops over time.

 2. The formal patterns related to simplification and complexity in ancient Assyrian art are considered a reflection of the development of social, religious, and political thought in the ancient civilizations of Iraq. In the beginning, art was characterized by simplicity and a focus on symbolism. With the passage of time, it developed to include complexity in details, to reflect changes in various Ages. The fourth chapter also included a set of recommendations and proposals, and the study concluded with a list of sources.
