Abstract

Research Summary

The current research, “The Constant and the Variable in Modern European Painting,” consists of four chapters. The first of them deals with the research problem, which is defined by answering the following question:

• How are constants and variables represented in modern European painting?

The first chapter also addressed the importance and need for the research, as well as the research objective.

The research boundaries were defined by the period (1900-1960).

The second chapter, which presents the theoretical framework and previous studies, addresses the meaning of the constant and the variable in its first section. The second section addresses the constant and the variable in the structure of modern European graphic thought. It then examines the indicators resulting from the theoretical framework and previous studies.

The third chapter (research procedures) dealt with the research community, the research sample, and the research tool, in addition to the research methodology and analysis of the sample amounting to (4) as a model. The fourth chapter contained (the research results, conclusions, recommendations, and proposals). Among the results that the researcher reached were: The effect of the fixed and variable concepts of aesthetics and semantics appeared in the artistic achievements of modern European painting. Therefore, we find manifestations of asceticism.

Through lines and shapes, this smoothness in the simplicity of lines revealed the fixed and changing inner and spiritual meanings in meaning to highlight and reveal the introspective subject of the completed artwork, where the reduction in shapes is through the European painter’s search for non-resemblance and for spiritual and ideal purity, as asceticism was revealed through color in the artistic productions of European painters, and the colors, through their asceticism, expressed the spiritual meanings with a fixed and changing significance.

The search for a metaphysical content, essence, and core beyond the material existence of the real world is a search for truth with fixed and changing connotations of the idealism that the European painter creates, however he reveals that truth and its source by abandoning the world of space and sense to the world of time and absolute spirit. This is evident in all the models in the research sample.

Based on the results obtained, the researcher arrived at a set of conclusions, as follows:

1- The visual discourse of a literary text, which possesses fixed dimensions and shifting connotations, does not express a social or historical thought, but rather, as a whole, represents an openness to themes with idealistic connotations.

2- We find that the European painter's experience has significance in the dualistic idea of opposites. This is not new, but rather an awareness of nature and its life, divided between the apparent and the hidden. We find him embodying this in his artistic productions, which express everything that is constant and changeable about the manifestations of their matter in constant conflict.
