Abstract

This research explores the "dialectical transformation between intentionality and chance" as a fundamental pillar in the structural formation of contemporary ceramic art. The research problem emerges from a core question: How does the artist's conscious will (intentionality) interact with the spontaneity of the material and technical events (chance) to produce a contemporary visual discourse? The study aims to uncover the philosophical and technical mechanisms governing this transformation within formal systems and surface manifestations. Adopting a descriptive-analytical methodology, the theoretical framework consists of two main sections: the first examines the philosophical roots of intentionality and chance, while the second focuses on their applications in modern art schools and global ceramic techniques (such as Raku).

The research yielded several key results, most notably: contemporary ceramics represent a "tense partnership" between the artist's self (intent) and the material's resistance (chance). Chance is no longer viewed as a technical error but has evolved into a conscious "creative methodology" that bestows the work with aesthetic wonder and a sense of uncertainty. Furthermore, the study demonstrated that reductive techniques (like Raku) act as a dynamic mediator, allowing chance to manifest under the umbrella of "open intentionality." This has contributed to shifting ceramics from a functional sphere into a conceptual and sculptural domain.
