This research addresses the topic of renewal in the techniques of theatrical performance spaces, as one of the most significant aspects of the development of contemporary theatre. The study explores the aesthetic and artistic transformations that have contributed to reshaping the relationship between theatrical performance and the audience. The research problem focuses on identifying how modern theatrical techniques have contributed to the development of theatrical space and the reconstruction of its aesthetic and expressive dimensions. The study aims to identify the aesthetics of renewal in theatrical performance spaces through examining the transformations of theatrical space from a fixed physical setting into a dynamic and interactive element that actively participates in producing meaning within the theatrical performance.
The researcher adopted the descriptive-analytical method and relied on the indicators derived from the theoretical framework in analyzing the selected samples. The research samples included two theatrical performances: Barad Al-Mawta (The Morgue) directed by عصام حميد and Hitha’i (My Shoe) directed by Ali Al-Abbadi. The study revealed that theatrical space in these performances exceeded its traditional role as a mere background and became a living, dynamic entity interacting with lighting, sound, movement, and scenography to reflect the psychological and social struggles of the Iraqi individual.
The findings also showed that the performances relied heavily on symbolic visual elements such as the morgue, corpses, shoes, and garbage bags as semiotic signs expressing destruction, death, alienation, and hope simultaneously. Moreover, the study concluded that the renewal of theatrical space created a more interactive theatrical experience in which the audience became part of the dramatic event rather than passive spectators. Real locations, such as the burned courthouse used in My Shoe, were transformed into visual texts carrying social and political meanings. The research further confirmed that all theatrical elements—including the actor’s body, lighting, sound effects, décor, and costumes—worked together harmoniously to create a contemporary aesthetic and intellectual discourse reflecting the transformations of modern theatre and its continuous pursuit of experimentation and renewal.
