Abstract

Abstract

Iraqi painting in the twentieth century underwent profound transformations, extending from traditional imitation to modernity, influenced by deep intellectual, social, cultural, and political changes within Iraqi society. This study aims to examine the philosophical, aesthetic, and cultural implications of Faiq Hassan’s (1914–1992) works and to analyze his prominent role in the transition of Iraqi painting from traditional forms to modernity in a systematic and clear manner. Through combining Iraqi heritage elements with modern artistic approaches, Hassan established a new visual language that reflects Iraq’s cultural and social identity while aligning with global modern art trends and contemporary artistic developments. The research employs a descriptive-analytical methodology, analyzing a selection of his most significant works to uncover the artistic techniques, styles, and cultural symbols used, illustrating how each piece embodies the shift from traditional to modern painting. The study’s significance lies in highlighting Hassan’s role as a key figure in shaping modern Iraqi visual identity and providing a comprehensive analytical framework for understanding the relationship between tradition and modernity in Iraqi painting.
