Semiotics of Dance in Contemporary Iraqi Theatrical Performance

Man did not know any language at the beginning of his life except for the language of signs, movement and symbols, and through his body he communicates all ideas and meanings. Dance and the signs and symbols it carries in the dancer's body and revealing these codes through the body. The movement of the body gains great importance, as semiotics in dance helps add depth and meaning to the performance and the audience's understanding of the artistic content. The symbols in dance refer to the message or idea that the dancers are trying to convey through their movements and bodily expressions. Semiotics can be an expression of certain feelings, a story, an idea, or even an abstract concept. To enhance communication with the audience and convey a certain message or feeling clearly and effectively. Therefore, the body has importance in life, and therefore the dancing body has importance in the theatrical performance as a means of conveying the idea to the recipient. The research was divided into four chapters. The first chapter included (the methodological framework) for the research and the research problem represented by the following question (semiotics of dance in the Iraqi theatrical performance?) While the researcher identified the importance of the research and the need for it, and thus shed light on the appearance of dance in the theatrical performance, as for the need to shed light on the formation of the body, and the scientific research aims to identify the semiotics of dance in the Iraqi theatrical performance. The limits of the research were determined between the period (2013-2023), and then the first chapter was concluded by defining the terms and the procedural definition.
As for the second chapter (the theoretical framework) for the research, it included two topics, the first was semiotics and its divisions, while the second topic was dance and its types and dance in the world theater, and concluded with previous studies and indicators.
As for the third chapter (research procedures), it included the research community, which amounted to (15) theatrical performances The research sample chosen by the researcher in an intentional manner included three shows, which are (Ahriman - Israfil's Trumpet - Mercy Shot). As for the research tool, the researcher relied on the indicators of the theoretical framework. As for the research method, if the chapter was concluded with it, the researcher relied on the descriptive (analytical) method. The research was concluded with the results, conclusions, recommendations, suggestions, and finally the sources.
