Abstract

Research Summary

The current research is concerned with studying collective memory and its representations in the artworks of Ali Al-Tajer. It is divided into four chapters. The first chapter outlines the significance and objective of the study, which is to identify the collective memory and its representations in the works of Ali Al-Tajer during the time period between 2008 and 2021. This chapter concludes with a definition of the research terms

The second chapter presents the theoretical framework, which includes two sections:1- the concept of collective memory according to Maurice Halbwachs, and 2-approaches to collective memory in contemporary Iraqi painting.

The third chapter discusses the research methodology, starting with the description of the research population. The sample consisted of four artworks selected purposefully

The fourth chapter presents the results of the analysis, including findings such as: the works of Ali Al-Tajer reveal a strong presence of collective memory as a fundamental element in the construction of visual production. His works recall historical events and social experiences as central themes that are visually revived in a symbolic expressive style. Collective memory in Al-Tajer's art is manifested through the structural composition of the main characters in his paintings, which harmonize with other elements of the artwork to express aesthetic and emotional values that are part of the country’s heritage, history, and culture

Among the conclusions reached by the research: the artist Ali Al-Tajer asserts his position as a cultural agent who plays a dual role—as both a witness to events and a historian who reconfigures them through the tools of visual art—in an effort to keep memory present in collective consciousness.
