Abstract

Abstract

The analysis of pictorial artworks is a complex cognitive and aesthetic practice that aims to explore the formal structures and symbolic meanings embedded within the artwork, as well as to understand the visual and contextual relationships that contribute to shaping its meaning. This study is dedicated to analyzing pictorial compositions through the lens of Erwin Panofsky’s theory, which is considered one of the most prominent approaches in the field of art criticism and visual analysis.

The research is structured into four chapters. The aim of the study is framed by the following boundaries:

 • Subject boundaries: The analysis of pictorial artworks in light of Panofsky’s theoretical strategy, relying on specialized artistic sources.

 • Temporal boundaries: The time period between  1889 and 1937.

 • Spatial boundaries: Modern European painting.

The second chapter is the theoretical framework, consisting of two sections. The first addresses approaches to aesthetic response and reception, while the second focuses on the strategies of Panofsky’s theory.

The third chapter presents the research procedures, including the research population and sample, as well as the analysis of the selected artwork.

The fourth chapter includes the research findings and conclusions, in addition to recommendations and suggestions.

Key findings include:

1.    Art criticism is a fundamental element of the fine arts, contributing to the analysis and interpretation of artworks, which enhances the understanding of their formal structure.

2.    Panofsky’s theory seeks to connect visual compositions to the cultural and historical contexts in which the artworks were produced.

Conclusions drawn from the study:

1.    Panofsky’s theory contributes to linking the artwork with its intellectual, cultural, and historical contexts.

2.    The theory supports an academic understanding of visual art, moving beyond superficial interpretations.

The fourth chapter also includes a set of recommendations and suggestions, and the study concludes with a list of sources and references.
