Abstract

Abstract:

This study examines the role of technological selection and its impact on reinforcing the identity of interior spaces. Interior design, within its applied context, requires a deliberate technical selection and a tailored design approach for its compositional elements, grounded in coherent and interrelated design principles. Such an approach necessitates an understanding of the mechanisms of technological selection that ensure functional efficiency while simultaneously achieving aesthetic harmony.Accordingly, the research problem and objective focus on exploring how technological selection contributes to the formation of both the aesthetic and functional identity of interior spaces, as well as investigating the extent to which these technologies may strengthen or diminish the overall design identity of a place.

The scope of the study is limited spatially and temporally to major conference halls within the Gulf Cooperation Council countries during the period from 2016 to 2022. The theoretical framework is structured into two main sections: the first addresses the conceptual foundations of technological selection, while the second examines the role of technological integration in enhancing the identity of interior spaces. Together, these sections form the basis for developing a set of analytical indicators, which were applied to the research sample as an evaluative tool. The selected case studies were chosen intentionally and include the Grand Hall of the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture, the Grand Conference Hall of Al Baraka Palace in Oman, and the Grand Hall of Qasr Al Watan for Conferences in the United Arab Emirates. The analytical application of these indicators led to the formulation of results that reflect the influence of technological selection on the identity of interior spaces.
