Abstract

ABSTRACT

This study aims to identify the psychology of irony and its manifestations in the masks worn by the characters in James Ensor's works.

The study consists of two sections. The first section is titled "The Psychology of Irony: A Study of Intellectual and Psychological References," and the second section is titled "The Art of Masks in Modern European Painting and its Psychological Approaches."

The study population consisted of 50 paintings of figures wearing masks that embody the psychology of irony. Five examples of these paintings, representing 10% of the current study population, were selected using a systematic random sampling method. The researcher adopted a descriptive approach using the descriptive-analytical method with content analysis, which necessitated the development of an instrument and ensuring its validity and reliability. Among the findings of this study is that the tragic act is embodied in the features of the psychology of irony in James Ensor's characters, whose masks suggest loneliness, conflict, and fear.
