Abstract

Abstract:

Sculpture has historically been closely linked to the existence of buildings used for religious, ceremonial, funerary, residential, educational, and other human activities highlighting the clear complementarity between architecture and sculpture in creating forms that enhance human experience. The realm of sculptural architecture intersects with textile and fashion design through the representation of sculptural architecture in innovative compositional formations that align with the intellectual and aesthetic foundations of textile and fashion designs. This relationship is evident both in ornamental aspects and in the structural composition of fashion designs, reflecting the revival of sculptural architecture in new creative outputs that appeal to the viewer’s taste.

Accordingly, the researcher traced the development of sculptural architecture from the dawn of historical civilizations and examined most of its global examples, raising the central research question: How can the conceptual and compositional principles of sculptural architecture be embodied and transformed into a visual language in textile and fashion designs while preserving their symbolic values and structural creativity?

The study emphasizes the importance of analyzing the relationship between sculptural architecture, its conceptual and compositional foundations, and textile and fashion designs. The research aims to investigate sculptural architecture, clarify its conceptual and compositional principles in textile and fashion designs, and propose design suggestions inspired by sculptural architecture for implementation in textiles and fashion.

The spatial scope of the study includes textile and fashion designs available in exhibitions and global fashion houses accessible via online platforms, while the temporal scope covers designs produced between 2011 and 2019.

Chapter Two addresses four main themes: the concept of sculptural architecture, the compositional mechanisms of sculptural architecture in textile and fashion design, its conceptual dimensions and principles in textile and fashion design, and technical applications of sculptural architecture in textile and fashion design. Chapter Three outlines the research methodology, relying on a descriptive approach to analyze the selected samples and achieve the research objectives. Chapter Four presents the results of sample analyses, revealing various sculptural symbols derived from the cultural heritage of Eastern civilizations, Greek civilization, and works by the abstract sculptor Henry Moore. The study shows that textile designs based on direct inspiration applied full or partial abstraction and modification in fashion design.

The findings indicate that the relationship between sculptural architecture and textile and fashion design paves the way for the creation of more flexible, structural, and functional architectural and fashion designs in the future. The study concludes with design suggestions, appendices, and a reference list.
