The concept of sadism and its representations in medieval art

Abstract

Research Summary:

Medieval art is filled with imagery depicting acts of humiliation, torture, and execution. These artistic representations often highlight either the brutality of pagans toward early Christian missionaries or the severe punishments imposed by religious authorities on individuals deemed sinners. Such punishments were justified as necessary for maintaining religious principles and moral integrity

This study is structured into four chapters. The first chapter introduces the research problem, focusing on the central question: How is sadistic imagery portrayed in medieval artwork? It also discusses the study’s significance, objectives—mainly to examine the concept of sadism and how it appears in medieval artistic expressions—along with defining key terms and setting the scope of the research.

The second chapter is divided into two main sections:

  1-Sadism in Philosophical and Psychological Thought

2-Artistic Trends in the Medieval Period

Additionally, this chapter presents theoretical insights and a review of previous scholarly works related to the topic.

The third chapter outlines the methodology, detailing the research population, selected sample, tools used for analysis, and the overall approach. The study focuses on five artistic depictions of torture from the medieval period, which are examined in depth.

The final chapter presents the findings and conclusions. Key insights include:

  1-Medieval artistic narratives often depict violent punishment—such as executions, dismemberment, and mutilation—not merely as punitive measures but as acts believed to offer spiritual redemption to the condemned.

 2-Many artworks show tortured individuals with calm and submissive expressions, reflecting a belief in suffering as a path to purification. The imagery suggests that these figures accept their torment as part of their spiritual journey.

Among the conclusions drawn:

 1-The visual representation of suffering conveys elements of masochism, as victims appear to embrace pain willingly, seeing it as a means of absolution from their sins

2-The study concludes with recommendations, proposals for further research, a bibliography, and a summary in English
