The Psychological Dimensions of Narcissistic Personality and Their Representations in the Drawings of Jana Kolberg

Abstract

Research Summary:

     The present study addresses the topic of the psychological dimensions of the narcissistic personality and their representations in the artworks of Yana Kohlberg. The research is structured into four chapters.

Chapter One presents the research problem, which is formulated as follows: What are the psychological dimensions of the narcissistic personality and how are they represented in the artworks of Yana Kohlberg? It also includes the significance of the study, as well as its main objective, which is to identify these psychological dimensions and their artistic representations. The study is limited to the period (2020–2024), based on artworks obtained from internet sources. In addition, key terms are defined operationally.Chapter Two is divided into two sections.. The second explores ، Psychological Dimensions and Their Theoretical Interpretations in Light of Artistic Creativity. This chapter also presents the indicators derived from the theoretical framework.Chapter Three outlines the research procedures. The study adopts a descriptive-analytical method for analyzing the research sample. The population consists of selected artworks, and the sample includes (5) paintings chosen from the works of Yana Kohlberg, representing different stages of her artistic experience.

Chapter Four presents the results, conclusions, and recommendations. The most significant findings include:

1- the artworks through the depiction of figures as the primary focus of composition, employing poses, color distribution, and symbolic elements to highlight the presence of the ego and reinforce the artist's individuality.

2-The artworks demonstrate the dominance of the ego in the compositional structure, as artistic elements are directed toward emphasizing the self both visually and symbolically, reflecting a clear desire to assert personal presence and artistic distinction.

3-Identity crisis and internal tension are manifested through the fluctuation in the representation of figures between uniqueness and integration, reflecting a psychological struggle between the desire for distinction and the need for harmony with the surrounding environment.

4-Transitions between structured composition and improvisation in artistic handling reveal weak emotional regulation and fluctuating moods, with psychological tension reflected in stark contrasts in colors, lines, and symbolic movement.
